Milkya's eight, left school when his father died and now cleans fish with teeth for 30 cents of euro. Abba walks an hour each day to get to school. Others can not go because their disabilities prevent them walking. All live in Ethiopia, Africa's oldest country, with more than 90 million inhabitants and an average of seven children per family and thousands of miles away of a more lucky reality.
Pau Gasol, UNICEF ambassador since 2003 and one of the best athletes in the history of Spanish sport, has been committed to this organization to try to alleviate situations like these. "I would like to leave this world better than how I found it", he says in 'Pau's project', the report in which laSexta TV has portrayed the collaboration between Gasol and UNICEF, since in April, he decided that Ethiopia would be the country where he would act with Schools for Africa, an initiative of the Nelson Mandela Foundation and UNICEF to the education of millions of children in Africa.
LaSexta's intention, apart from make known the reality of life in Ethiopia, is to raise awareness of the importance of supporting cooperation projects like this so that someday are no longer needed. "How much are wrong those who doubt the success of cooperation", said Gasol in the report.
LaSexta's journalist Cristina Saavedra, coordinator for the project management, is also part of the team conducting the interview accompanied Pau on his trip to Ethiopia.
Pau's project is a work of Oriol Bosch, responsible for laSexta image, which is close to the very different and distant realities experienced by a number of Ethiopians in contrast with the reality that Pau lives in Los Angeles in his daily life as a star in the NBA. These two realities will find each other in the Pau's journey to Ethiopia. The report reveals the humanitarian side of Pau, one of the greatest stars of the world sport, that do not forget the most disadvantaged. "We are icons that children admire and have the responsibility to lead by example. Like it or not", says conscious.
This is not the first time laSexta and Pau Gasol work together, and is not the first time laSexta and UNICEF unite for a cause of cooperation. This time the three are joined in solidarity with the poorest and with the intention of raising the maximum possible funds for the project to grow even more. To that end, laSexta has launched www.lasexta.com/elproyectodepau, a website adds to the charity project for Internet users to get their assistance to Ethiopia through Pau's project.
